SOUTH FRONT OF THE TAGUS RIVER

LOOKING NORTH TO SOUTH

Course: Project of Landscape Architecture II

Date: June 2008

Instructor: Teresa Alfaiate, PhD

Collaborators: Tatiana Rio

Standing in the North bank of the Tagus looking South, one can’t help but notice the huge differences between both sides. While the North is characterized by its intense urban life that every year grows to occupy a little more of the riverfront, the South bank is only sparsely populated, mainly by port related industries sitting in small beaches between the large walls of rock and forest that dominate it. This project redevelops the South shore in a way that grabs the attention from across the river. Dominant lines connect the low plains with the higher grounds using contrasting deciduous trees plantations. Abandoned industrial complexes are transformed for cultural and recreational use, connected to small beaches by an over-water path. The details of the project are presented in four scale models, built with grey board, polystyrene foam, steel mesh, acetate sheets, pins, white paper and white felt pad.
