Lisbon is the capital of Portugal. During the last few centuries this city and its suburbs have experienced a disorganised boom resulting in the destruction of ecological systems of significant relevance. This, in turn, led to a lower number of green areas, diminished occupation of cities centres, and increased time in dislocation and the use of private transportation (and its added pollution) – all resulting in lowered quality of life. This work tackles both the ecological and anthropological systems, as well the hypothetical grows areas. That information allowed the development of a land-use proposition which has the potential to increase sustainability of the metropolitan areas and also improve quality of life by ensuring the protection of high quality soils, high infiltration areas and important green areas. Flood locations are defined and optimal sites for construction are identified and accompanied by recommended prevention measures to avoid inconsequential urban grows.
